Church School Programs

Pre-K/K Room: Children in preschool through kindergarten are welcome to join us in our Pre-K/K room on the second floor. A short Christian lesson is presented each week, along with a collaborating activity. The room is staffed with a lead teacher and assistant each week.

Grades 1-6: Faith First is the name of the rotational model for Christian Education that First Church has been using since 2000. The school year is divided into 6 units of study, which the students learn over a 4 week period. During each unit of study, children stay with one grade level but visit a different center each week. Centers may include art, drama, video, cooking or computers. In this way, the lesson is reinforced over a few weeks as the children are exposed to many different ways of learning. Each grade level is accompanied by an adult "sheperd" who takes them to the different centers each week. Each center has it's own lead teacher. The children always begin in worship and remain in the service until they are invited to join their sheperd in the hallway to be escorted to the proper center for the week.

Grade 7: The seventh graders attend a pre-Confirmation class. They begin each week in worship and are dismissed with the younger children to join their teacher in room 1 (at the top of the Williams Street staircase.) This class includes bonding activities, open discussion and content necessary for a young adult to make an informed decision about making his/her Confirmation in eight grade. This class is taught by a lead teacher each week, and will be led by the Associate Pastor approximately one Sunday per month.

Volunteers are the heart of our church school program. Each rotation requires the assistance of 7 people. Therefore, we ask each family with a child in Pre-K through 7th grade to commit to helping with one unit of study per year, either as a lead teacher in one center or as a sheperd who stays with one particular grade level. All of the lesson plans are written by Director of Children's Ministries Nancy Yesu. Please see the registration/volunteer forms for more information.
