Y.E.S. (Youth Encountering the Spirit) is the fellowship program designed to allow youth to experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in an open and welcoming Christian community. Middle Y.E.S. activities for grades 6-8 are held on Friday evenings and include movie nights, game nights, cooking nights, and service opportunities. Senior Y.E.S. meetings for grades 9-12 typically fall on Sunday evenings. Programs include retreats, games, discussions, local service projects, and an annual week-long mission trip. The 2008 mission trip consisted of 14 youth and 3 adults from First Church combined with 34 other youth and adults from the Massachusetts Conference of the UCC. They travelled by bus to Knoxville, Tennesseee and attended the National Youth Event. Along the way they stopped in War, West Virginia to lend a hand painting and renovating houses.
Confirmation classes provide youth in 8th grade with instruction and conversation about the Christian faith, its practices, expressions, history and beliefs. Classes meet twice a month following worship, October to May. Upon completion of this program, confirmands are invited to become members of First Church.
Youth are also welcome to participate in the other ministries of the church, including singing with a choir, playing in the bell choir, teaching Sunday School, greeting and ushering, and serving as a youth member of the Board of Deacons, to name just a few.
