WHO WE ARE

Our Mission

Embraced by the love of God in Christ, our mission is to love and serve our world. We seek to grow in Christ’s family through our journey inward towards faith and knowledge outward, toward love and justice, always rooted and nurtured in worship.”

We Are Open and Affirming

On September 18, 2011 members of First Church voted to become an Open and Affirming congregation by adopting the following welcome statement: “We, the First Church of Christ in Longmeadow, strive to live out our stated mission to seek love and justice in our world. We welcome persons of every age, race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, mental, physical, emotional, economic and social status, and circumstance of life into the full participation and ministry of our church.”

WHAT IS THE UCC?

The First Church of Christ in Longmeadow is a congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC). The UCC formed in 1957 with the union of two Protestant traditions: the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and the Congregational Christian Churches.

The UCC:

  • Witnesses to the reality and power of the crucified and risen Christ

  • Confesses the authority of one God

  • Affirms the primacy of Scripture, the doctrine of justification by faith, the priesthood of all believers, and the principle of Christian freedom

  • Celebrates two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s Supper

  • Relies on covenantal relationships, rather than legal agreements, among congregations

  • Believes the primary task of the church is proclaiming the Good News of God’s love
