About The Event
Friday Evening Fellowship: Early American Music
April 14th at 7:00 PM
You're  invited to the home of Ellie Santos for snacks, beverages, and a program about Early American Music, presented by Guy McLean, curator of the Westfield Athenaeum.
Program Description: Since the United States is a relatively new country,  and a nation of immigrants, we haven't been able to develop a truly  indigenous American folk music that our composers could draw upon. Our  classical music - created by composers such as Charles Ives, Aaron  Copland, and Leonard Bernstein - combines elements of vernacular song  and Jazz with European styles. But this combination of elements have  always had a somewhat unwieldy feel for American audiences. This issue  has both plagued and challenged musicians for more than a century. Come  join us for a discussion of how American composers over the last century  have attempted to address the special issues related to this country's  art music.
